Our verdict on Kalshi
Kalshi is not a bookmaker, and the difference is the whole point. It is a federally regulated exchange: on 4 November 2020 the Commodity Futures Trading Commission issued an Order of Designation making KalshiEX LLC, a Delaware company in San Francisco, a designated contract market under the Commodity Exchange Act. What you trade are event contracts, priced between 1¢ and 99¢ and worth $1 at settlement if you are right, and you can sell your position at any time before then. There is no house. The price is what other traders will pay, and Kalshi's revenue is fees on the trade, not your losses.
That structure is why Kalshi is available in US states that have no legal sportsbook, and also why it has spent 2026 in court and in front of state regulators over whether sports contracts are gambling — the monthly industry reports on this site have followed that fight, from Nevada's lawsuit to Arizona's criminal charges to the CFTC's June proposed rule. A trader should understand that the product's legal footing is federal pre-emption of state gambling law, and that the argument is live.
The App Store rates the app 4.8 from 513,000 ratings, the largest base of any platform on this site by a wide margin. The seventeen reviews quoted here, fifteen from the App Store in July 2026, run twelve five-star to two one-star. "User-friendly interface" and "innovative features" lead the pros at eight and seven mentions. The cons are practical rather than structural: "unreliable site/app" three times — one reviewer says it "freezes" when markets are moving fast — "complex withdrawal process" twice, "limited market selection" twice, and one two-star reviewer who never received a referral bonus. The complaint that recurs in the five-star reviews is the same one: a golfer withdraws and the contract settles against you, and there is no bookmaker to argue with because there is no bookmaker.
If you want fixed odds and a customer-service desk, this is not it. If you want to be the house, take the other side of a price you think is wrong, and exit before settlement — and you are in one of the states where the argument has not yet gone against it — Kalshi is the only federally regulated venue that lets you.

When bets are running crazy it freezes could be better.

Choose a different app
The platform is okay, but the app itself is very bad. You won't get the bonus for signing up with a referral code. And your funds (including winnings) get locked for days. This does not happen on the professional sports books.
